USPiM's 4th Annual Poetry Conference
January 5 - January 12, 2013
Mérida, Yucatán

Welcome to USPiM's 4th Annual Conference!  This extraordinary week will highlight outstanding contemporary American and Mexican poets. We invite you to participate in our stimulating discussions, writing workshops and readings with other writing professionals in lovely Mérida, the cultural center of the Yucatan Peninsula.

Join poets Anselm Berrigan, Nicole Cooley, Lynn Emanuel, Tom Sleigh and  renowned translator, Suzanne Jill Levine for a week of workshops and readings; special guest, Ron Silliman, for three afternoon conversations, and readings by Mexican poets Mario Bojórquez, Rubén Márquez, Ámbar Past and  Álvaro Solís.

Sunday morning after Orientation, your week will begin with an introduction to Mayan culture with a group tour of the Puuc Route, in order to establish a sense of place.  Sunday evening, you are  invited to connect with colleagues at an intimate evening cocktail party which is held in a lovely colonial home. On Monday, a week-long immersion in poetry and writing begins.  By the time our mid-week visit to the ecological reserve and beach rolls around, you've made new friends, been intellectually stimulated and are experiencing a new sense of confidence while visiting Mexico!  Click above on Poets for workshop instructor bios; visit our Workshops page for course descriptions;  Schedule and Register!

Enjoy the sights and sounds of local markets, climb ancient Mayan temples and learn about the spiritual center of Mayan civilization, dig your toes into pristine sands and turquoise waters and  enjoy a boat ride through Celestun Biosphere Reserve (home to over 10,000 pink flamingos)--all with a community of poets. The inspirational setting of colonial buildings, Moorish arches and the warm hospitality of the Mayan people combined with the ‘college-town’ feel of Mérida -- make one feel at home quickly.
